Working on Louisville's Mature Lots
A mature lot changes how we build. Established trees mean root zones to protect, settled grades mean drainage patterns that have had decades to assert themselves, and existing concrete usually has to come out before anything new goes in. Our Louisville projects tend to start with demolition and regrading, then move to paver patios, seat walls, fire features, and lighting scaled to fit an established neighborhood rather than overwhelm it.
Old Town Scale, McCaslin Scale
On the smaller lots near Old Town and downtown Louisville, we design tight, efficient outdoor rooms: a compact paver patio, a gas fire table instead of a sprawling pit, planters that double as seating. Farther out toward McCaslin Boulevard, larger suburban lots open up room for full outdoor kitchens and multi-zone layouts. Same crew, same standards, sized to the street.
Retaining Walls and Drainage on Louisville's Settled Grades
Decades of settling means a Louisville yard has already decided where water goes, and it is rarely where you want it. Before any hardscape, we read the existing drainage patterns, then correct them with grade, subsurface drainage, and low retaining or seat walls that hold the new levels without looking like engineering. Walls near mature trees get laid out around root zones rather than through them, which sometimes means a curved run instead of a straight one, and that is a better wall and a living tree instead of a straight wall and a dead one.
